An adult Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) sits on the top of the Bonnet Carre spillway structure. This species has been the national emblem of the Unites States since 1782 as well as a spiritual symbol for native peoples. On the west bank of the Mississippi River, a flare stack from a chemical plant can be seen, its shape reminiscent of the torch held by the Statue of Liberty
