A Purple Gallinule (Porphyrio martinicus) peers out from a tangle of swamp grasses. The marshes and swamps of the extreme southeastern U.S. form the northern limit of their habitat. This species is one of the most vividly colored birds in all of North America, and their color scheme blends surprisingly well with tropical and subtropical wetlands.
