An adult Great Egret (Ardea alba) sits on a nest alongside two chicks in a rookery in Central Louisiana. Large numbers of these birds were killed in the late 19th century when bird feathers were fashionable in ladies’ hats. The National Audubon Society chose this bird as its symbol, as the society was formed partially to prevent the killing of birds for their feathers.
